About Gazifère

The distribution system
Established in the Outaouais region in 1959, Gazifère is one of two distributors of natural gas in Quebec. Serving nearly 35,000 residential, commercial, institutional and industrial customers, Gazifère owns and operates a 815.1 km gas supply system. In 2006, Gazifère supplied its natural gas customers with 168 million cubic metres (m3) of natural gas.

With a franchise effective until 2031, Gazifère serves the broad expanse of land between Fort-Coulonge, Montebello and Grand-Remous. Its coverage territory currently includes the city of Gatineau, which takes in the old municipalities of Hull, Aylmer, Gatineau, Masson-Angers and Buckingham.

Conditions of natural gas service
The distributor's conditions of natural gas service in its exclusive distribution territory have been set by the Régie pursuant to the Act respecting the Régie de l’énergie (R.S.Q.,c. R-6.01). These conditions relate to the distribution system, the services, the natural gas service request and contract, measurement, billing, payment, deposit and collection.

Rates
The supply price of natural gas is reviewed quarterly. Gazifère then bills its customers at the same rate it pays its supplier. Charges for gas transport and distribution include a regulated return. Thus, any change in the rate Gazifère charges is submitted to the provincial regulator, the Régie de l’énergie, for approval. (As an economic regulator, the Régie de l’énergie is responsible for reconciling the public interest, the protection of consumers and a fair return for carriers and distributors.)

Energy efficiency
Gazifère uses a variety of tools and activities to provide its customers with information on its various energy efficiency programs. From 2001 to 2005, energy efficiency programs produced estimated savings of 7.4 million m3 of natural gas, and 693 million litres of water.
