RNG is the term we use when referring to renewable natural gas, a source of energy recently introduced in the Quebec market and now offered by Gazifère here in the Outaouais. RNG is natural gas derived from organic waste (biomass) from farms, forests, landfills, water treatment plants and even your compost bin. The gas is captured, cleaned and injected into the existing gas distribution system, to then be used in the same way as conventional natural gas, that is to say to prepare supper, boil water, get to school or work, take a hot shower, and so on.
There are five things you should know about this new greener energy.
Renewable natural gas limits greenhouse gas emissions because it replaces a non-renewable fossil energy by 100% renewable energy and limits methane emissions generated when organic waste is buried in the ground. In 2019, the distribution of renewable natural gas made it possible to avoid a minimum of 8,100 tonnes of GHGs in Quebec, which represents more than 2,000 cars on our roads.
Our organic waste is the number one generator of renewable natural gas. More and more people are stepping up to the plate as they realize the importance of composting and waste recovery…one trash bin at a time! In addition to our household waste, farm waste like cow dung is just as important. It is by valorizing organic waste (biomethanization if you want to be more technical) that RNG manages to position itself as a carbon-neutral-and of course, renewable-energy!
In 2020, the RNG purchased by Gazifère was produced in Quebec, specifically in Saint-Thomas, Lanaudière. In fact, given the challenge that waste management poses for municipalities, the production of RNG in Quebec could become not only a tangible solution but also a source of revenue. Locally, RNG also helps create jobs and reduce the proportion of power purchased outside Quebec. Gazifère is currently working on several projects in the Outaouais in order to make locally produced RNG available to the people in its community.
For the time being, anyone who buys RNG does so voluntarily. Gazifère’s current and future customers can opt for between 1% and 100% of RNG for their annual gas consumption. This small ecological gesture is one that every resident can adapt to their reality by simply choosing their own percentage of consumption: 1%, 5%, 10% or 100%. It’s up to you!
For 2020, Gazifère injected 1% of RNG into its system, and will gradually reach 5% by 2025. Collectively, we have to change how we consume by turning to renewable energies, and maintaining that transition. Gazifère will adjust its RNG offer based on the demand from its customers, but will do everything it can to go green faster.
